Low Carbon Schools Project Driving GHG
Accounting and Sustainability Education in East Malaysia

The Low Carbon Schools Project in East Malaysia, part of the Eco-Schools Initiative and aligned with the United Nations Greening Education Partnership, aims to implement greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting in schools across Sabah and Sarawak as a pilot initiative. Focused on capacity development for both teachers and students, the project seeks to facilitate interventions that promote the establishment of low-carbon schools throughout the BIMP-EAGA region. Funded by the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Republic of Korea (ROK) Cooperation Fund (BKCF) through the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the project is led by the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Joint Business Council (JBC) Malaysia, with support from the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) Local Governments for Sustainability, South Asia, and the Green Growth Asia Foundation (GGAF).

Collaborative Efforts to Equip Schools with Tools, Training, and Recognition for Low-Carbon Action

Additional support for this project is also received from the Asian Development Bank, the Ministry of Education Malaysia, the Padawan Municipal Council and the State Ministry of Local Government and Housing (KKTP) Sabah to facilitate the implementation of this project. Easy-to-learn and disseminate training modules will be developed for students and teachers to enhance their capacity and knowledge. The project will also provide a guidebook on how low-carbon interventions can be implemented by schools and provide a checklist and assessment framework to guide their efforts in this regard. In addition, schools will be encouraged to plan and implement low-carbon and climate-resilient measures through annual award and recognition programmes.

The Low Carbon Schools project links with the Eco-Schools Project being implemented globally. The Eco-Schools programme was launched in 1994 by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in several European countries in response to the needs discussed at the Conference on Environment and Development of the United Nations. The Eco-Schools programme emphasises reporting aspects, urging students and schools to record the impact of projects based on 12 environmental themes. Furthermore, as a global initiative to support the acceleration of Climate Change Education, FEE in collaboration with UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) under the United Nations Greening Education Partnership aims to develop a strong, coherent and comprehensive action plan to produce students with knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to address climate change and promote sustainability.
